Spring Break Workshops will be held in downtown Nanaimo at The Port Theatre, Public Library, and Nanaimo Art Gallery during Spring Break the week of March 17 – 20. These half, full and multi-day events begin at 9:30 a.m. each day and are facilitated by passionate, energetic instructors from arts and technologies professions.

VIDEO PRODUCTION – 3 days (Mon, Tues, Wed) $75
Emerging writers, directors, producers, key creatives and crew will explore aspects of the filmmaking craft and gain a wider appreciation of the international filmmaking environment. It is also an opportunity for these youth to explore creative collaboration and to speak up about the change they want to see in their community and in Canada. The workshop will mimic the real life process of making a film from setting up a production company, to finding the right script and putting the film together and then distributing it on the film festival market. Students completing the workshop will have their work submitted to Canada's Reel Youth Film Festival. Fees include equipment and Film Festival filing fee.

MUSIC: FROM CONCEPT TO CUTTING A CD
3 days (Mon, Tues, Wed) $75
Create, play, produce, promote -- Believe it or not, this is an intensive three day workshop that gives you a sense of the world of professional musicianship. Learn to play the blues, work in a songwriters circle, form a band and play together as a group, work through the recording process, learn how to get your music out there. Like School Of Rock in a tightly compressed time frame. Career discussion with a professional to be named.

COMEDY INTENSIVE – 2 days (Mon & Tues) $40
Maximize laugh potential in this two day performance workshop that focuses on comic technique throughout the ages. In the morning of Day One: Old Comedy: instructors will introduce youth to a physical and vocal warm-up that increases self and spatial awareness; then engage in acting and improv exercises that develop confidence and team dynamics. In the afternoon, examine ancient comic plays of Aristophanes and Plautus, analyze portions of the texts, rehearse scenes in small groups, and then perform for our group and others. Enhance memory, character development, and text analysis skills! On Day Two: New Comedy: facilitators will run a morning warm-up, play acting games, and then talk about Shakespearean comedy and its connection to the Italian Commedia dell arte tradition. Examine stock scenarios and provide each actor a chance to perform gags, farcical routines, and famous funny speeches. This is a skills oriented class that combines academic and practical perspectives to give young actors a chance to understand and use standard jokes and comic opportunities developing comic characters and excerpts into performance pieces that will have an audience roaring in their seats.

BROADWAY BLITZ: MUSICAL THEATRE FOR TEENS
2 days (Wed & Thurs) $40
Great songs from great musical productions are featured in this course that gives teen participants their chance to shine like Broadway stars. This course takes students from basic to Broadway in two days of intensive musical theatre study; we will do physical and vocal warm-ups each day, examine a selection of famous musical theatre texts and lyrics in context, choreograph solo and group numbers, rehearse our favourite songs, and perform for our group and other Festival participants on the afternoon of day two. This course is triple threat training, so be prepared to focus and engage in a professional approach to theatre’s performance process. Wear comfortable clothing, and bring water, creativity and commitment. No stage experience necessary.

THEATRE ARTS – WHO AM I: FROM PAGE TO STAGE
1 day (Thurs) $25
In acting as in life, passion and commitment are the key. In this one-day workshop we will work as a group, in pairs, and individually as we explore various scenes and exercises in order to learn how to build a well rounded fully-human character. By the end of the day we will know what it means to be:
-Truly Spontaneous i.e. Working in the Moment
-Creating High Stakes and Meaningful Circumstances
-Playing Strong and Specific Actions. “Acting is the Reality of Doing”
-Working from a strong Character Point of View
-Working from Self and Working Off Others

BACKSTAGE & TECH WIZARDRY
Half-day (Thurs) $15
See what happens back stage at the Port Theatre; how lights, sound and technological wizardry enhance the production values of stage performances. Learn how different types of productions require diverse approaches to technology and how computers and artists mesh to control what the audience sees and feels.

FINE ARTS
1 day (Tues, Wed, Thurs) $25 each 1-day session
Interested in painting, sculpting, sketching, print making? Take over the Nanaimo Art Gallery (downtown) and experiment with a variety of art forms. Professional artists provide the leadership and we provide the tools -- paper, charcoal, pastels and clay. All levels welcome.

PHOTOGRAPHY: FOCUS ON PHOTOJOURNALISM
2 days (Mon & Tues, Wed & Thurs) $40 each 2-day session

Heydemann Art of Photography is proud to present a photography workshop as part of the annual children’s festival.  The 2 day workshop will be packed with a ton of information and fun, exciting projects.  The workshop will focus on improving your photography skills by better understanding composition, lighting and metering. Participants will receive a photojournalist assignment with tight deadlines as well as be sent out on a scavenger hunt.  Guest speakers will also be doing presentation on what a career in photography looks like.  Come join us for two fun informative days.  (Cameras and laptops will be provided)

WRITERS’ WORKSHOP
1 day (Thurs) $25
Learn how to make your words jump off the page and keep a reader glued to your work. Published authors and poets will lead these workshops, focusing on different styles and genres.

THURSDAY WRAP PARTY – Free
3:00 p.m. Thursday March 20th on-stage at The Port Theatre
Metis singer songwriter Dennis Lacusta brings his earthy humour, original music and lessons on human relationships to the stage to open our Wrap Party. The event concludes with cre8 Competitions winner announcements and awards, presentation by the cre8 Band, and special presentations by cre8 students.


Students who entered the cre8 Competitions receive a $5 discount on the cost of workshop registration.

Each workshop includes a career planning and direction component.

Lunch provided in all full day and multi day workshops.

All workshops are kept as small as possible to optimize each student's experience and maintain a hands-on approach.
